Personnel Support Detachment Afloat West Receives 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award
Award for Business Excellence in Workplace
By Lieutenant Robert V. Liberato, Assistant Officer in Charge, PSD Afloat West
SAN DIEGO - Personnel Support Detachment Afloat West (PSD) Afloat West has been selected and on October 17th announced as the recipient of the 2011 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility in the at-large category.
"We are both excited and honored to be recipients of the Sloan Award, this award is testament to the flexibility of PSD Afloat with the support of Captain Winton Smith, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego in both supporting the ships operating in San Diego and supporting the Sailors we work for," said Mr. Howard Marshall, Director of Personnel Support Detachment Afloat West.
As a recipient of the 2011 Sloan Award, PSD Afloat West ranks in the top 20 percent of employers nationally in terms of its programs, policies and culture for creating an effective and flexible workplace.
"As part of the award process we had to provide information on the command's support to our people," said LT Robert Liberato, Assistant Officer in Charge of the PSD. "What makes this award unique is that after we provided input, an anonymous survey was done to see whether the command actually does what it says it does. We were then compared to other commands and businesses across the country."
Sloan Award honorees become part of a national flexibility leadership network representing employers of all sizes and from all sectors to share best practices, exchange ideas and serve as models for other employers and community leaders. Exclusive learning opportunities will be shared with this network throughout the year.
The Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility are part of When Work Works, a national project on workplace flexibility and workplace effectiveness from Families and Work Institute in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for a Competitive Workforce and the Twiga Foundation.
